Academics
Academic culture approach at Nortwest School
This relates to the norms and expectations created around academic performance of learners at Northwest school. It focuses on process rather than short term outcomes. Academic performance is a welcomed side benefit, but not the driving focus. The school will have a supportive academic culture, which still ignites the fire of ambition in its learners. The school focuses more on instilling a love for learning and life-long curiosity. Northwest is a learner’s home away from home where learners; teachers and staff make up one family. We strongly believe in helping the learners beyond the classroom by providing constant emotional support and individualized care.
Report Card Policy:
Every formal school, measures academic progress achievement in learners in different ways. Northwest gauges progress made by learners in the various spheres of learning:
Academics:
This is done in the following ways:
Continuous Assessment – This involves the regular taking of structured tests which are sanctioned and censored by the Quality Assurance team. These are marked and recorded and marks compiled into assessment mark schedules. There are generally two assessments done termly which are the first and second assessments. The first assessment mark schedule comprises 2 or 3 structured tests whose average is assimilated into the assessment mark. The assessment marks are cumulatively built into the term mark for the second assessment report.
For the Advanced level learners, the first assessment marks are entered into the Bi-termly report which is tripartite compilation by the following stake holders:
- The subject teacher – commends on the academic conduct of the learner.
- The Form Teacher – dwells on the pastoral side of issues.
- The learner – commends on their challenges experienced and how they are going to be mitigated at individual level.
- The divisional/Level Head –gives the overall comment on the academic performance of the learner.
A level learners get two academic reports termly. Every learner does at least 4 subjects, 3 core subjects and General Paper at AS Level.
Cultural:
This is an assessment on the level and extent to which the learner is participating in the cultural life of the school. This goes on the report card termly.
Sports:
Sport and culture help to mould the character of the learner. Character is power as it defines one’s level of influence in society, a key aspect of global leadership.
